Driver Tim Williams wasn’t sure if he’d done the right thing when he took giant pacer Beach Flybye (Downbytheseaside) to the front in today’s $25,000 Stearne Roofing Winton Cup. But the four year old harness racing gelding began so good from the ten metre mark he thought he might as well.

“He’s just a brilliant naturally fast quick beginner. He’s probably not a natural leader but we do a lot of work with him in front at home and he’s the guinea pig for some of the others at times. Tim wasn’t sure whether he was doing the right thing, but the horse kept kicking and he was great,” co-trainer Amanda Telfer commented after Beach Flybye held on to beat a late charging Wag Star (Sweet Lou) by a diminishing half a length.

The winning time was 2-58.0.

Today’s Cup was the final race in the Southern Country Cup Series and the $40,000 Regent Car Court Southern Country Cup Final will be raced this Sunday at Ascot Park as part of Diamonds Day.

“He’ll stay down this week for that race. He’s still a big raw horse and there’s still some improvement in him.”
