Winton Workouts – Friday 29th November 2019

Two Year Mobile Pace – 1609 metres

Just the two runners with a nose separating Port Au Prince (Somebeachsomewhere – Maheer Princess – gelding) and Scribe (Sportswriter – Cool Delight – filly).

Quality gelding Full Noise looked bigger and stronger this time in. Trainer Brett Gray had a strong hold on the gelding in his preliminary and he proved too good for Superfast Pat winning by a half a length. Get Lucky was having his first run back and he looked to be a lot stronger too. Southland trotting ranks look very strong this season and both Full Noise, Superfast Pat and Get Lucky look to be  in for good seasons.

Learners Mobile Pace 2400 metres

Cuchulainn now trained by Brett Gray for Merv and Meg Butterworth broke in the previous heat so raced against the learner pacer winning by half a length  from Ah Mach. The winning time was 3-11.3 with the last 800 metres in 60.0.

The well-related Croesus looked to be a good stayer in the making when he beat Moody River by a neck. He showed great fighting qualities without been fully extended.

Three Nathan Williamson trotters lined up in this heat with BK Merlot winning for driver Ollie Kite. He plotted a path up the inside to beat Sunday Invasion and Super Sekkie. All three should qualify easily. BK Merlot is a three year old filly by Peak out of Sapient and is a half-sister to Bordeaux.

Non-Winners Mobile Pace (up to MR50) 2400 metres

This heat throw out a host on potential winners. Don’t Need An Excuse beat The Interceptor and half a length with Saint Tropez third and Broadbeach in fourth place.  The best run came from the next horse in Unsurpassed. He had plenty left at the end and 100 metres past the winning post was well ahead of the other runners.

Onedin Hurricane a full-brother to Onedin Mach (7 wins) and a half-brother to Onedin Hustler (10 wins) looked like an early winner for Clark Barron. He beat Stratofortress by a nose. Stratofortress looks to have plenty of potential. Post both in the ‘watch out for’ book.

Prince Abbey led then trailed before getting the better of Please Shuddup. The winning margin was half a length. Slate finished wide out for third. This video is worth a review as some of the other runners weren’t fully extended.
