Pyramid Rose delivers another bloom

Trainer Matty Williamson describes Pyramid Rose (Majestic Son) as cantankerous, but she was on her best behaviour today when she won the Diamond Creek Farm/SBSR Silk Road Final at the Forbury Park TC Meeting at Gore.

“I wouldn’t speak too soon, but her form has become solid and she’s probably trotted her last six (starts) which is the first time we’ve got that far with her. She’s got ability, but she throws the toys out from time to time. Her last start was a wee bit disappointing, but she had a bit of a cold after that…. but she’s obviously come out the other side really good,” Williamson said.

Today’s win was made easier as Becky’s Girl and Mor Moonlight galloped.

After the early rush, Williamson got four back on the inside with stablemate New Mexico leading. When Mor Moonlight galloped, Williamson was able to move off the inside running line. Turning in, Pyramid Rose let down strongly to run down Harriets Moment, New Mexico and Rangitata.

“She’s a female, so she can pick a fight when she wants to. You sort of have to go with her a bit, hence I usually drive her because she’s one you have to know a bit.”

Williamson says he went into today’s race with low expectations.

“With the draw (inside of the second row) I thought we were going to be behind some very high-powered horses. Then to see the two favourites (Becky’s Girl and Mor Moonlight) gallop, particularly Mor Moonlight around the home bend, we got a gap and I won’t bother taking a lotto ticket.”

Some of the ownership group including Neville Hazlett, raced horses with Matty’ s father Phil for many years.  They included Pyramid Magic (14) and Pyramid Monarch (10).

“When Dad was cutting his numbers back they moved over to me, which has been great. They’ve gone through a bit of heartbreak with this horse. There’s been a few times we thought she was going to be a winner, they’ve gone to the races and watched her gallop. They’ll be really over the moon about this. She’ll probably have a break now because she’s been up for a very long time. I’ll have a talk to the owners and make sure they’re on board with that idea.”
