Canterbury pacer Devil Woman (Always B Miki) hung on to win the Subway Winton Two Year Old Mobile Pace at Winton today.

The Cran and Chrissie Dalgety trained filly, in the hands of their son Carter was taken to the top before handing up to Mona Lisa. When Mona Lisa started to battle, Dalgety didn’t wait for the passing lane. Moving off the inside he quickly took the lead and held on by half a head from Classic Daisy with Northview Louie a neck back in third.

“She wasn’t totally comfortable in front, so I was glad I could take a trail. When I asked her to sprint she really did, so that was good. She knocked off when she got out on her own but when those other ones came, she really dug in,” Carter said.

Prior to today’s debut Devil Woman had won two trials and was made favourite on the back of those two performances.

“We’ve had her from a young age and she’s always shown quite a bit of ability. She had two trials before this and won them both, so we thought she was natural enough to run early and the trip away would do her good.”

She was bred by Peter Boag whose father Peter senior trained 29 winners between 1980 and 2002, all named with the prefix Unique. His best horse was Unique Blue Chip which won nine, including the Hannon Memorial.

Devil Woman is out of Dizzy Miss Lizzy which won four races for Nigel McGrath and a further two in Australia. Her New Zealand wins include the Two Year Old Diamond in 2017 at Ashburton when she paced a mile in 1-53.9.

“She is a natural two year old and she probably gets that from her mother. A bit of that and the Miki, (sire Always B Miki) I think she’ll be right.”

Devil Woman will return to Canterbury and be prepared for the $60,000 G2 Bionic Chance Two Year Old Fillies Bracelet.
