SBSR stock shine at Addington
At Addington’s premier harness racing meeting on Friday night, stock bred and sold under the SBSR umbrella were among those that shone.
The Steven Reid trained Jumal (Downbytheseaside) was sensational.
He was back early, improved down the back straight and was three wide before getting to the top, turning in. He held out the late comers with plenty of grit and determination, winning by three quarters of a length from En Sogno.
“After the start and the first 800 I got quite anxious. The speed he showed coming round them. I said to Dawn (wife) geez he’s going to have to be good. When he was coming round the corner you could see he was still trucking. I thought geez he’s got a fair chance and I hope he can hold on. It was really quite spine tingling,” SBSR breeder Dave Kennedy said.

The winning time was 2-22.8 - a mile rate of 1-56.0.
“I knew he was a very good horse but I didn’t think he could do that.”
Jumal remains unbeaten in six starts.
“It was a marvellous training effort to have the horse so cherry ripe. Sam (Ottley) drove him well. When they slowed down she went round and that was probably the winning of the race.”
Kennedy says watching Jumal win on Friday night is right up there with some of the wins recorded by I’m Themightyquinn which he also bred.
“Quinny did some marvellous things over at Gloucester Park when he used to come round them wide and leave them for dead.”
Kennedy sold Jumal to Reid at the 2024 NZ Standardbred Sales in Christchurch for $95,000.
“I think he’s got the potential to be the best horse I’ve bred by the look of it.”
Jumal is out of Beaudiene Blinkz, a full sister to Beaudiene Bad Babe the winner of twenty two and $404,898, and Beaudiene Boaz twenty five wins and winning stakes of $1,256,587.
Kennedy will be offering a full brother to Jumal at February’s NZB Standardbred Yearling Sales.
“He’s a very similar type to Jumal with beautiful conformation and he’s athletic. He’s a Downbytheseaside and you have to work with them and let them get their confidence. He’s very similar to Jumal, maybe a fraction bigger.”
Meanwhile Kennedy and co-owner Cleland Murdoch have decided to retire Treacherous Gall.
The Captaintreacherous mare has been performing below par recently.
“She’s got nothing else to prove and I’m not going to knock her around. I’ll send her to Tall Tree Stud and they can put her in foal.”
The partnership has decided to send her to King Of Swing.
“Being a Captain (Captaintreacherous) out of a Bettor’s (Bettor’s Delight) limits your options big time. I thought I’d try King Of Swing. He won three Miracle Miles and had 44 wins. I like the Western Hanover line and it’s a good maternal family.”
Other SBSR winners on Friday night were Kyvalley Ray and Republican Party.

Kyvalley Ray was bred by Phil Williamson who sold him for $100,000 to Kyvalley Racing at the 2024 sales in Christchurch.
In the hands of Blair Orange the Bold Eagle colt was too good in the $75,000 NZB Standardbred Harness Million Two Year Old Mobile Trot, beating three rivals.
He’s out of the Dream Vacation mare Kenny’s Dream, a daughter of eleven win mare One Under Kenny.
Trained by Victorian Brent Lilley, Kyvalley Ray is a half-brother to the smart three year old trotter Tarragindi (Majestic Son) who’s won four of his nine starts and will race in the $500,000 The Ascent before tackling the $200,000 New Zealand Trotting Derby seven days later.
Republican Party, (Bettor’s Delight) driven positively by Carter Dalgety was also too good for his open class rivals.
The win on Friday night was the six year old entire’s twenty second.
He was bred by John and Katrina Price and sold to Kentuckiana Lodge at the 2020 NZ Standardbred Sale for $210,000.
