Death of Duke
30th June 2020
Sadly former star Southland pacer Duke Of Wellington has died in Australia. At this stage the reason for his death is unknown.
Duke Of Wellington won five of his ten starts here for Winton trainer Lauren Pearson, including the 2018 Southern Supremacy Stakes.
He was bought by Merv and Meg Butterworth and sent to Australian trainer Kerryn Manning just after that win.
He only lined up seven times in Australia, winning another three races including the Group Two City Of Melton Plate. He also ran third in the Group One $100,000 Four Year Old Bonanza behind Poster Boy and Spankem.
“I told Brent (Barclay) and he didn’t believe me,” said Pearson referring to the death. He said the gelding was being prepared for a number of big group races.
Duke Of Wellington bred by Lester Smith, was by American Ideal out of the Christian Cullen mare Galleons Cheer.
Smith has two Sweet Lou colts out of the mare – Duke Of Cornwell a rising two year old and a weanling named Duke Of Scotland.
